SMOKIN' ribs for the first time.

The woes of smoking ribs for the first time

The other day I had an epiphany I wanted some BBQ and i didn't want to go out to get it either so i searched YouTube, pinterest and our favorite site google.  I originally wanted brisket so set out to find the best "how to" and brisket video out there, I looked at reviews, how many likes the video had and I found some very good tips.  once i found my recipe i set out to buy all the ingredients i had everything except for a couple of spices and the brisket.

I get to the frozen meat section and bam! i find it only its more then what my recipe calls for and 60 dollars...I never turned around so quickly in my life, i was on the rocks with it for a while and eventually i told myself not for my first time and left it at that.

So back to drawing board for me and i came up with ribs, I picked them up and get everything ready at home.  I quickly went into the zone and started everything I had my hickory wood, in grill thermometer, chimney and the grill started in no time, seasoned the ribs, everything was looking good.

Until...an hour and a half in the grill starts getting too hot, the temperature was supposed to be from 225 to 250 degrees and its at 300 degrees and staying steady im moving things around.  so back to google for ways for it to cool down but everything is telling me its hard to take heat away its easy to give heat to the grill...in my head im screaming I know that! give me something I don't know.  While this was happening my son is in the background crying because the sound of the door being open constantly woke him up, my wife is giving me dirty looks and im looking guilty but I was thinking to myself I need to press on I am not about to lose to the grill.  my son eventually falls asleep when my wife takes him for a walk and finally  I was able to continue cooking without feeling bad.

eventually I calm down and start thinking if its going at a higher temperature ill just shorten the amount of time by an hour and pray that it turns out great, I pulled the ribs off the grill and let them sit for a bit and dug in.  they were great!  let me know if you had an experience similar to this with your first time smoking meats.

  1. We just got a BBQ of our own. I am excited to try it out...We have never tried ribs on the grill but I am not so good at cooking meat. I am trying to get better. I have learned with most the lower the heat the better so I can relate to your experience. ha ha
